Why is my imap inbox empty?

If you use the Imap protocol for your email account and suddenly your inbox appears to be empty in your mail client, this means you will need to re-subscribe to your imap folder(s) in your email client.

NOTE: If you find the solution below does not help you or you are experiencing weird behavior in Outlook/Entourage/MacMail after doing this, it is best to remove and re-add your account to Outlook/Entourage?MacMail.
